Pilaf Rises: Episode 77-78

SPEAKER_00And we're back. I'm Truman. And I'm Jesse. And this is Becoming Saiyans Dragon Ball Rewatch podcast. On today's episode, we watched episodes 77 and 78 titled Uh Pilaf's Tactics and the Eternal Dragon Rises. Pilaf's Tactics came out in Japan on September 2nd, 1987, and in America on November 26, 2002. Whereas the Eternal Dragon Rises came out on September 9th, 1987, and November 27, 2002. Jumping into some differences from the manga, we have uh on the first episode the scene with the Fortune Teller Baba, with everyone at Fortune Teller Baba's Palace while Goku's away, and all the bad omens talk is completely only in the anime. Um trivia, the car that the Pilaf gang drives is a Mercedes-Benz. Um in the Pilaf gang's first scene, Chris Forbus doubles uh line for Chris Kayson as Shu when affirming his understanding of Pilaf's plans for dealing with Goku. Goku's turtle school uniform is destroyed in this episode. He wears Shu's outfit as his temporary outfit, which will last all the way through another episode coming up. In the edited version, uh edited Toonami version, when Shu suggests they shouldn't look for the Dragon Balls anymore, Pilaf angrily tells him he's fired. And the uncut version, he tells him to shut up. Which is kind of weird so weird that Toonami was like, You can't say shut up. That's a bad word.
SPEAKER_02Well, you can say he's fired.
SPEAKER_00You can fire him. Which is even worse because of the the implications nowadays. Um Differences from the manga in the next episode. When Goku returns from to Fortune Teller Baba's palace, Yamcha explains to him that while he's away, Master Oshi's accepted him as a student. Yamcha's conversation with Master Oshi was only shown in the anime. Goku's journey with Upa to the Sacred Land is extended in the anime, with him bouncing off lily pads, going under waterfalls, flying through clouds. In the anime, uh initially Upa is shown to be scared to ask Shinron for the wish wish, which almost caused Goku to ask. Um in the manga, Opa was nervous, but was able to do it. Um the wish um uh trivia for this episode is the wish brought later was brought forth a blank in blank. Um in the English dub, Bora thanks Goku for all his help, saying he's a gift from the stars. Ironically, this would later be proven true, as Goku is later revealed to be an alien from the Saiyan race. In the Japanese version, Bora refers to Goku as child of the gods, whereas Goku would ultimately gain such divinity upon blah blah blah blah blah. As Goku and Upa make their way toward uh to the Goran Tower, the song the Blue Travelers can be heard. This episode marked the last instance in the Dragon Ball anime in which Goku and Shenron interacted. They will not see each other again until episode 240 of Dragon Ball Z. So they go w a while without talking to each other again. Which is kind of crazy, you know, like to think about, like, as somebody who's seen all of this, it's like, holy crap, I didn't realize he didn't talk to him again for that long.
SPEAKER_02Um it's impressive because you think about like, well, you know, it's Dragon Ball. You're chasing the balls now, but like They kinda get away from that. Really no reason for them to chase the balls around now, because they're not there's no one really, it seems to stop.
SPEAKER_00I mean the red ribbon's gone. We know Keiloff might show back up again, but who cares? Like, he's not really.
SPEAKER_02It seems like he's just like, oh well, we we don't want Goku to get it immediately, so he's gotta like have a little bit of time.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Um, but that's all the trivia we had. So previously, on Dragon Ball. Goku is off on hit the races to catch the mysterious car, which is driven by Pilaf and the gang. When he catches up to them, he has an epic fight that lasts for about a half an episode, where whereas he eventually defeats Pilaf and the gang, and then him and Upa go to um to save Bora from death. And they wish on it, and it happens instantly, Jesse. And then Goku goes back and starts off on his next journey, and that's what you missed on Dragon Ball. Jesse, go for it.
SPEAKER_02Uh, again, like solid episodes, definitely not near as good as the last episodes were. Um, but like these are still pretty fun episodes. Like, we have fun with it, but there's definitely a lot more like added filler where it's like, well, we can't like let everything be summed up in like with a bow tie and everything immediately.
SPEAKER_00These ones I I count these as more transitional episodes, is what it felt like in my opinion. That's exactly like we went from the epicness of the five fights and the emotional uh ep scenes with Gohan to and now we gotta get done with the mission and start the next one. Yeah. Is kind of what the these episodes were. It was just like uh, and we gotta, you know, work through through these problems, get to the next bit so we can get to the end of these episodes.
SPEAKER_02And like truly, I mean, at least from what I can tell, this feels like the true end to like this saga of episodes. Like this this mission.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And we're kind of in a transition end of a saga where they're just like, well, we don't want to make like a micro saga, like five episodes. Yeah, it does kind of. So we just lump them into this one, and then the next full saga will be the tournament as we discussed off off on mic.
SPEAKER_00Um, yeah, because from what I remember, these next five episodes are pretty much just like we don't know where to put them, so we're just gonna add them to the end of the saga. Baba's arc is done. Goku's going off on training. We're gonna get Bora back. We got Bora back with uh Upa and Bora back together. We're probably not gonna see them for a while, it would be my guess. Um we got Bulma going to hang out on Roshi's Island with Roshi, Krillin, Yamcha, Puar. Uh probably Ulong and Launch are also there, presumably, and Goku's going off on his own. So my from what I remember, we're gonna have A plots with Goku and B plots with jumping back to see what the other people are doing, is kind of what's going to happen for these next five episodes. Somewhere generally.
SPEAKER_02And that's not me trying to spoil what's going to happen, but like there's gonna be an A, like you can probably feel like it feels obvious that like that's kind of where we're at is these next five episodes are explaining the as we mentioned as mentioned at the end of the of 78, the three-year time skip we're about to feel between this moment and the tournament saga art thing that we're gonna have.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it feels like you know, like those um um like annuals, I guess we're like if I was bringing up in comics where like in comics you'll have like the like the f the arcs where you're reading like the five episodes the or the five part series, mini-series inside of the series, and then you have like an annual, which is just like they go do stuff in between transitional, or you have like the f the big five to ten to twenty issue arc, but then you gotta have like two or three of just like Batman beating up the Riddler for like the umpteenth time or whatever. Yeah, something like that. What what's up with the the gang violence in Gotham City? Let's see what Batman does for two episodes before like the next big thing happens.
SPEAKER_02Let's give Batman a break from like fighting gods and stuff. Let's just go fight some petty theft.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and it's like and for like this is what it feels like for Goku's like Goku for the next few episodes is not going to be challenged. He's he's going to be challenged in other ways, but not like life or death situations. Yeah, he's building like mental toughness probably for experiences with life so he can be a little bit smarter the next time we see him, yada yada. Um but yeah, uh I enjoyed these episodes, but they are kind of a letdown compared to the episodes we just had.
SPEAKER_02Like it's a fun, it's a fun, like cool cool-off.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Like I'm sure the next few episodes here as well are gonna be like a nice cool-off of like the like immaculate emotion. Because we also have like an emotional moment here. Yeah, and it's really good too. Yeah. Like we get another reunion moment, yeah, which is like that's big and it's a it's a big thing. But at the same time, we also are gonna have to cool off from yeah, we just met Gohan for the first time. Now he's gone again.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Now we got Bora back to the realm of the living.
SPEAKER_00We had a mini tournament saga inside this bit. We just got done killing all of the Red Ribbon army. Like, we gotta take a minute to breathe and do some silly stuff, maybe like a penguin village type thing where it's just like, what are we doing type of thing. Like, I hope it's not as crazy as that, but like that's what it feels like. It's like how the blue it's like how the blue saga ended in the penguin village, and it's like, yeah, because you couldn't really top what had happened before that, you know. We had to just um jump to a different random world. That's what that's what it, if I remember correctly, is it's generally like uh just like just fun little things that Toriyama probably wrote at par at points but just didn't have a good spot to put it in sequentially in the show.
SPEAKER_02Or things like he wanted to include, but it just like didn't fit. Yeah. Or like how maybe he has like the three-year time skip just immediately happen. Yeah. But he's like, well, I want to expand on that when I have a chance to do it in like a style that's not as draining for me in my hands, and people other people can help me do it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Um but uh I do jumping into the episode, like just starting at the top. Um, my first note was what a mystery indeed. Because Bolt Mo's like, why is the radar not working? Like, I can't see where it is. Who what's in that car? Like, who's driving the car? And Bob is like, You got 500 million Zenny or whatever. 10 million billion. Yeah, whatever it is. And she's like, Why we beat you? And she's like, that was a one-time offer, kid.
SPEAKER_02And she's just like, very cool as ever. Yep.
SPEAKER_00Uh, but then we get another flashback, which is to uh the Pilaf flashback, where Pilaf is reminiscing on all of the great times he's had recently.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that's I I I wrote thinking about how how many times we've lost. Yep, this is how it is, this is how that's this adventure ended. It's how this one ended. Yeah. But now this time, this time, we know we got we gotta grab his tail.
SPEAKER_00We know what we're doing. But before we get to the plan of we gotta grab his tail, Shu brings up, hey, what's your plan for the Dragon Balls? And Pilov has no idea, which is par for the course.
SPEAKER_02It's like Pilov has the plankton moment of like, oh no, I never thought I'd get this far.
SPEAKER_00I never thought I'd get this far. Um I'm just glad it didn't take Goku too long to figure out who was driving the car. I thought that was gonna be longer of them like trying to pretend like, you know, but it's I'm glad he pretty much keyed off on it immediately. Um, but they um, you know, sho I I thought what was going to happen as we were watching it, because it had been a minute, um, was that Pilaf pulls out the Dragon Ball to glow, Bulma's gonna see it flicker onto a radar and they were all gonna come back come in as backup. That did not end up happening. But I wrote that down, I was like, probably shouldn't have taken it out of the box, man.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Well, I mean, he they were hiding in the box so like they could get a jump on Goku. Like I feel like that's pretty obvious. Yeah, I mean that's what I'm gonna do. So when Goku shows up, they're like, well, cat's out of the bag now. He knows we got it and he knows where we're at, so you can't really jump out and get him. Like he's he's already here.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And this is where I wrote down, uh, swearing is bad, says Goku, because they want to do a pinky swear, and he's like, What? No, we can't swear, swearing's bad.
SPEAKER_02Which is really funny, because they just said pinky promise. Wouldn't have been a problem. But I'm sure that might be just maybe dialectical issues between Japan and the American. Like maybe in Japan's called a pinky swear.
SPEAKER_00I mean, we call it pinky swear sometimes around here too.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, but you grew up thinking pinky promise. This is what was why I'm like, maybe that's just maybe it's just a flat swear in Japan. Or maybe it's like maybe it changed, it slowly molded from swear globally in the last like 40 to 50 years since he wrote this.
SPEAKER_00So my next thing was I wonder if these are robots are gonna megazort, which they end up doing, but I wrote it back up. I wrote uh I wrote a my what was it? Mighty morphing power P-Loffs. Yeah. Because they're they are bulky big robots, but they definitely look like they fit together pretty well. Mighty morphing power pilots. One thing I noticed, and you pointed it out when we were watching it, it was like perfect place for a Dragon Ball battle, the middle of nowhere.
SPEAKER_02Their favorite, their favorite arena, the middle of nowhere, so there's no casualties. Yeah. Um, but one thing I didn't notice. You know, you know that's when a s it's when a silly battle happens. When a serious battle happens, is when there's possible casualties. You remember that? Yeah. That's that is something that I I think is like a weird meme that I know about Dragon Balls. Like, it's you know it's serious when a civilian could get hurt. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And they one thing that I noticed while we were watching it was like when they first meet up, it's very tight quarters, right? Like there's rocks nearby and everything.
SPEAKER_02But they're in a very small like little gap.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, like a gap in the where the road cuts through like the mountains. Like a tight ravine. Yeah. But as soon as the fight starts, they're on a barren wasteland with just like places off in the background. It's like, what? Did they teleport in mid-battle? This was not where they were standing at three minutes ago.
SPEAKER_02That's just an animation continuity thing. I know, I know it is, but it was it was it was definitely easier, easier to animate that for the fight than it was to like animate around all the terrain and stuff. Yeah, have the full terrain going.
SPEAKER_00But like they had terrain, and then like as soon as the fight starts, the terrain is level. There's spots where things can get thrown into because things are gonna get thrown into them. Like bit like kind of like you know, rock foundations and stuff where they can throw a rock heel off or Goku or whatever into, but like it was not like it was much close much more close quarters to start. Um, and then they pull the gullible Goku trope after they like start out beating on each other a bit, Goku takes a little bit of a beating. Um, but then they pull the gullible Goku trope because they're like, I don't see the tail. Goku, look over there. He's like, huh? And then they grab him and light his pants on fire. He's tucking. And they're and then Goku's like, My tail got ripped off. What do you mean?
SPEAKER_02And they're like, Oh well, I guess we got no chance. Well, then that's so they that's when they mighty morphine power peel off. Yeah. And then and then Goku just command mea uh uh my morphin suit or like suit. She like, I can't I can't use my suit, and they're like, go to the emu mode. Yeah, and then they turn the other two suits and start running away.
SPEAKER_00Which is not a bad idea for them. It's like, well, plan A didn't work, plan B didn't work, time to run away.
SPEAKER_02You know, say what you want about them getting beat in the past. They are still really good at realizing when to run away.
SPEAKER_00When their goose is cooked.
SPEAKER_02The problem is they're not good enough at making things fast enough to run away, which when you're getting chased by Goku, has to be like insanely fast.
SPEAKER_00Fa like you have to somehow be faster than Goku, which is hard to do. Yes.
SPEAKER_02Not many people in this world can do that.
SPEAKER_00One thing we skipped over is the nude Goku fighting. It's like, okay, I guess. Uh, whatever. But it's like, come on, we had to you had to burn all of his pants off. You couldn't have just pulled his pants down for a second. Like, I would have preferred that than them burning them off so he's half naked for the next 10 minutes.
SPEAKER_02But it does set up a really good joke. At the at with that, which comes like a really good funny moment. I guess I should say joke, a really good, like, funny moment.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it does pay off with the shoe chain with the the shoe foot change. Just picking shoes close. Yeah. And leaving shoes sitting there, like, oh, goodbye, man. Yeah. But before we get there, they decide to try to shoot a rocket at Goku to throw him off, but Goku has experience with rockets now. So he catches it and throws it back. Yeah. And that's the end of it. And Pelof's like, well, I can't fight you hand to hand. Just take it. Just leave, please. And then he's like, one more thing. Shoe. Clothes. Now. And she's like, oh boy, I guess whatever. We'll keep this as a secret between us.
SPEAKER_02And then he shows back up and everyone's like, What what happened to your clothes?
SPEAKER_00And he's like, Ah, long story. Anyways, Opa, let's go. Which I think this is the beginning of the thing. That's that starts the next episode. Where it's like, time to bring back Bora. And then they fly off, and Opa's like scared because he doesn't think it's gonna work.
SPEAKER_02And I think I do I do want to point out before as they fly off, uh Baba has the line of like that boy's gonna be like world famous one day.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, which is maybe some foreshadowing.
SPEAKER_02And everyone's like, What do you mean, Baba? I was like, Have you seen something? She's like, No, I just got a feeling. Yeah. I'm like, no, I think she's seen something.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02But like, because you haven't paid her, she's not gonna tell you what she's saying.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I mean, and he is world famous in our world nowadays, you know.
SPEAKER_02Like he he's he's been world famous for decades now, yeah, for sure. In our world, yeah. And he'll probably I I have an assumption that his name's gonna start getting around real fast after the next tournament saga.
SPEAKER_00I guess we'll see. I guess we'll see.
SPEAKER_02Because uh we we do get some shadow foreshadowing with tournament saga at the end of this episode uh this last episode of like, oh, they got so many people, like it's happening faster now.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that was that was a cool thing. That's why we have to have the three-year time skip. Yeah, instead of a five-year time skip.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. But that we can let's get to like the really awesome emotional moment. That's probably the best moment of these episodes.
SPEAKER_00Well, we gotta work our way there. We gotta work our way there. Because we have Yamcha begging to be trained by Roshi. Roshi being like, I can only take on two students, I can't take on a third. Bulma doing her questionable move of like, you know, if Yamcha is training on your island, I might come by and you live out in the ocean. I've got this new bikini that you know I've been wanting to try out.
SPEAKER_02Yoshi's just like, oh, where can you where can you start?
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Never mind, I can take on a third one, no problem at all.
SPEAKER_02Well, at the time he says we take on a third one, but we'll find out why he said it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Um, but it's it I like um it's the next thing for me was that it was sweet watching Upa and Goku like bond on this last little trip together. Like to end the song.
SPEAKER_02They're just such wholesome friends, like they're just they're little kids. Like it's the classic little kid thing of like you just follow the route, like the kind of shy, skiddish one follows the really out loud and proud one. This is exactly what's going on.
SPEAKER_00There's a lot of fun moments here that they were all added to the episode, but they're all they're all nice.
SPEAKER_02Sliding down the leaves, flying to the cloud, just like using a leaf to go under a waterfall so they don't get wet. Yeah, like it's just you're just having childhood fun for the first time, and I mean since his dad died.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Like Opa's getting to enjoy life again. Goku's getting to like enjoy life, you know, that's not just enjoying beating people up. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And this is probably the last time Opa's going to leave his area. At least more than likely, because he's going to be the guardian of the area.
SPEAKER_02So at least for a very long time. Maybe he like takes a pilgrimage while his dad stays back when he's like a teenager or something.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but for a while, this is gonna be his last time leaving the we don't know their like ritual rites or whatever. But he's this is his last one. He gets to soak it in one last time, and he's actually happy, which is the first time in a while that I've we've seen him be actually happy and not skittish.
SPEAKER_02This is legitimately the first time that he's been outside of his like home and not been extremely depressed. Yeah. Like he's actually able to have positive thoughts.
SPEAKER_00And the light is coming at the end of the tunnel.
SPEAKER_02Like he he knows that the closer they get, the closer they get back to it.
SPEAKER_00He's nervous it's not gonna work. Which brings up a lot of the things that he does in this episode where he's like crying and then super excited, but then sad and nervous, but also happy and like his emotions, he's not an emotional roller coaster this episode, but it comes from that um that point where he You know the lights at the end of the tunnel, but he's still not quite sure it's gonna work. He doesn't quite believe it yet because he hasn't seen it. He believes Goku, but he's still like, but are you sure? Yeah, it's kind of the thought he's having there. And then the last thing I wrote down is they always bust out the good animation for Shenron. They always do. That was my next note as well.
SPEAKER_02Which does include, I wrote down this is that was a cool detail, and I I know it, because I was like, I'm gonna know the detail. I love when he's like spawning in.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And like the lightning's flashing, and you you get a close-up of like uh like the painting, like the carvings, I guess, on the to um uh tower. Yeah, and you see one of the like the the native carvings just turns into boarer's face for a sec.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Then it turns back. I'm like, that's a cool little detail. Yeah, it's a nice animation, a little nod. Like, I think that's that's when I realized I'm like, well, this is probably actually gonna work first, right? There's not gonna be much argument here.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And like, as somebody who's watched the show, like it's not not un not unnormal for Shinron or some other dragon to be like, oh, you want to bring some people back from the dead? That's well within my powers. Like people die all the time, but never once a year I'll bring somebody back. Like, I don't care. I I was trying to leave, like, leave the suspense for you because I knew you hadn't seen you hadn't seen it yet, but like yeah.
SPEAKER_02And I wasn't thinking uh there was nowhere in my brain where I was thinking like it wasn't. I knew the next tournament was coming up. Yeah, but I didn't think it might I thought like you know, they would get in, start getting the next tournament maybe, or like training for the next tournament. Yeah. Like next saga, and there's gonna be a tiny saga, then we're gonna get the tournament saga. I gotcha. So I didn't I you know I was going in with the thought like, oh, we have five more episodes left. Like they're gonna have to like do some tasks for Shinron to bring the dad back or something. Like just this one time or whatever. Yeah, no, I uh I I get where you're gonna be able to do that. That's where my brain was. But you know I'm glad to be wrong. I would it Have been really painful to put Upa through like a Herculean trial to get his dad back.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's much better that he just wakes up. Um, but it is a bit scary when he starts to wake up.
SPEAKER_02It's kind of a Frankenstein scene, but I think it's kind of like a little bit of a little bit of a thinking more like Not of the Lit or one of the Dawn of the Deads or whatever. Like a zombie movie.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, where it's like the legs shoot out and then his arm reaches out and he's like crawling out of the dirt.
SPEAKER_02I had a really funny observation with it where I'm just like, you know, it it might have helped him like not panic coming back to life if they, you know, didn't leave the dirt on top of him.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. If they took the dirt off. Yeah, but it does have a bit of like that like that horror film stuff going on with it to uh uh in like a PG-rated horror movie, but like it's very brief.
SPEAKER_01It's like 15 seconds.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but it it does have a bit of that where it's like, oh my gosh, like this is kind of creepy, but like obviously not like full-blown horror, but like it's hitting that like PG level horror stuff.
SPEAKER_02It gives you like a brief pause, like, are we gonna is Shenron going monkeys paw then?
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And it's like no, oh he's back, but he's a zombie.
SPEAKER_00But no, he's back and he's he's confused but happy to be back.
SPEAKER_02It takes it takes them, I think, about a minute or two to be like, oh, I remember dying, yeah. I'm good.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, he's traumatized forever because now he remembers he knows what death is like. Um, but he's back, yay!
SPEAKER_02Which in some in some stories that can be very freeing because you know what to expect.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Um, but then we get the sweet moment, the Upa and Bora reuniting, which is it it's great. I don't think it hits as hard as the Gohan Goku one, but it is great that like we the there is a happy ending for that.
SPEAKER_02Like it's a great happy ending. It doesn't hit as hard as the Goku Gohan, because we haven't spent 70 plus episodes with Upa. We've spent maybe what 13-ish? I think like five.
SPEAKER_00Like, because he was only in like a couple episodes and then a couple episodes, like I I guess I'm I'm thinking more like how long we've known Upo.
SPEAKER_02Oh yeah. But like talking about him being on screen, it's only been what, maybe six episodes. Maybe five to seven, like yeah, somewhere in that area, somewhere in that range. So like we haven't known him or of him or Bora or anything. And we only had Bora for like two. Yeah. If even was it was it I think it was two, maybe it was just one.
SPEAKER_00It's that one episode, he he we see him and then he dies, and then this episode.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so we've only had him for one before he comes back. Yeah. So like we have we and you immediately get an emotional connection because you like feel that this dude is just an amazing, awesome person in that one episode you get.
SPEAKER_00And it hurts when he dies. Yeah, and because he's the first like hero character death in the show.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, he's the first on-screen hero death because obviously Gohan's a hero, but yeah, he's dead before we even start.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Uh so yeah, like Bora is the first like on-screen hero death that we've had. And then moving into the next thing, like Goku hyper focusing on that four-star ball and then jumping up in the air like a fly like like a like a like a catch at the wall in baseball to catch the four-star ball. He's jumping out of the gym. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Like I thought that that was probably not exaggerating. One of the most impressive things Goku has done so far in this show.
SPEAKER_00The time the jump to the moment it flies away so he can catch it like within inches of it taking off.
SPEAKER_02Which also begs to begs to say, if that's possible, like, theoretically, there might come a time where people can just like keep the dra like keep like catch all of the dragon balls and then just keep making a wish every year.
SPEAKER_00Just drop a metal, like a metal cylinder over them as they're like flying up in the air and just like drop them into the grave.
SPEAKER_02Because if Goku could just catch it barehanded, I know Goku's like you know, an alien, super amazing person. Yeah. But like it still has to be at a velocity where like, you know, it's it means they can't just tear through everything. There's gotta be something you could put in their way to stop them. That's not just like having a you know, seven super awesome, you know, people jump up and catch them at the same time.
SPEAKER_00I mean, them puppies was flying. Like they were coming, they were.
SPEAKER_02I mean, you see what he catches, it it's they're just blurred lines. Like the the ball, none of the other balls are on screen, only the scre the one he caught. Like that's how fast they're moving.
SPEAKER_00And then we just kind of decompress for the episode. Like Bora's happy to be back. He like is very grateful. He says, anytime you need something, you can come and get me, I'll be there. Goku just like friends and allies. He's like, I owe you a life debt, like literally a legitimate life debt, yeah. Yeah, you need something, I'm there. Also, he's like, Do you want to stay for a little bit? I'll cook a meal. And Goku's like, I gotta get back to my friends.
SPEAKER_02This is this is one this is one of the few times Goku will turn down food. Yeah. Mostly because he's pretty confident he's gonna get food when he gets back anyway.
SPEAKER_00And then he pees in the pool. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And he pees in the the lake or pond or whatever.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Um, and then the three-year with the next part for me is that there's a three-year uh time skip coming up. And um the tra I one thing I found at the end of the episode is the training that Roshi makes him do, the only walking, no, like outside help, no nimbus cloud. That's that's straight lifted from the the uh sleeping princess in Devil's Castle when he makes uh Krillin and Goku run to the Devil's Castle. Yep. He's like, there no no c Nimbus Cloud, no cheating. You gotta you gotta hoof it. That that's your training.
SPEAKER_02Drag it over there.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. You gotta walk slash run slash swim over to that place. And I I we talked about it. It's like, man, that's brutal. But like when we were talking, when we were watching, like commentating. But he um that part was definitely like a thing that was kind of like it immediately I was like, ooh, that's like the movie. Yeah. Like I don't know what came first, I'm assuming this episode came before the movie, but like that was uh that's a movie line there for sure. Well I say you think we've talked about the movie coming out, like being promoed a few episodes ago. Yeah. But it doesn't like I don't know which one was written, like if the episode was written before the movie, or vice versa.
SPEAKER_02Or like if that was if the line was written in the manga before the movie.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Don't know what came first, chicken or egg or baby chicken. Um, but I guess, you know, we can um we can mark off your last two going into predictions, your last two arc predictions. Because you had no one of them drawn. He gets the seventh Dragon Ball by the end, that was a correct one. Uh the wish doesn't immediately work, that was an incorrect one. Um and then we um we jumped down to the predictions for the last couple episodes, and it's they fight against Pilaf, Mei, and Shu. Uh they they won't be defeated until the beginning of the next episode. That part was false.
SPEAKER_02I mean actually technically both are false because I said they. Yeah. I meant that like everyone was gonna go fight them. It ended up just being Goku. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And then they initiate a wish. That one is true because it's two people initiating the Goku initiates it. Oop asked the asked for the wish. Yeah. They have to go to Otherworld to ask Bora if he wants to come back. That one was incorrect. You did get uh one of them.
SPEAKER_02You did get one.
SPEAKER_00You hit one out of four. I did kind of b like goad you into making another prediction just because I wanted you to have more predictions than just those three. Because those three kind of felt like layups for the most part, and I wanted to tie I also wanted to tie in one of your predictions from the from the saga since you had brought it up, and we kind of assumed that's where that the end of this was gonna happen, you know. Um, but that's you know, that was a kind of a rough showing on your predictions this time. But not bad. It it happens from time to time.
SPEAKER_02There wasn't again it all of that came off of the assumption that like we had five more Dragon Ball related episodes. Yes, no, I I understand. Obviously, I don't think Dragon Ball is the same as the show, but like Dragon Balls related episodes.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Um, but then jumping into the next episodes, we have episode 79, Terror and Plague. And episode 80, Goku versus Sky Dragon. What do you think is going to happen?
SPEAKER_02Um I think there's a terror and a plague.
SPEAKER_00I mean, you might not be far off.
SPEAKER_02I'm not gonna give you anything, but uh I'm gonna guess like obviously we're beginning to Goku's like running around miscellaneous training for three years. So Goku one day walks, goes into a village where like someone is terrorizing them and giving them the plague or something.
SPEAKER_00Goku goes to a new village where somebody is giving out um the plague and terrorizing. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Somebody's doing bad things. Classic, classic, uh bad things. Classic villain thing.
SPEAKER_00What do you think is gonna happen in Goku versus Sky Dragon?
SPEAKER_02Uh the person doing the bad things is the Sky Dragon, and that's Goku beating it in that episode.
SPEAKER_00The person doing bad things is the Sky Dragon, and Goku wins uh wins the battle in that episode.
SPEAKER_02Yep. Okay.
SPEAKER_00Got anything else you think you want to throw out there?
SPEAKER_02Uh I don't think any I don't even know if those are correct. Yeah. I don't think that someone doing terror and plague is probably the only thing I got correct going in there, but yeah. Uh with no ability to like assume anything because Goku just ran off into the distance for the next five episodes. Yeah. That's the best I can come up with.
SPEAKER_00Hey, he it's it's it's something. So um gotta put something on the board. Yeah. There's gonna be some terror, there's gonna be some plague, there's gonna be a Skytracket, I don't know. I mean they don't really give me much to go off. Oh, I don't have any idea what's gonna happen next.
SPEAKER_02I could I I I could sit here all day and probably maybe get three correct, and that could give you twenty. Yeah. And then I got no thing to go.
SPEAKER_00Um, so Jesse, worst part. What do you think for these ones? Uh, man.
SPEAKER_02Um I don't know, because I mean, like, there's nothing that sticks out to me that's like immediately terrible.
SPEAKER_00I'm just gonna put the flashback for flashback's sake, because it's like we didn't need that. It's not necessary.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I guess like the P the Pilaf flashback. But it is kind of funny to think that P-Loff like has like PTSD.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, well, we already know he has PTSD because there's that one time in there in the Sky Days, and he wakes up to a nightmare of Goku ravaging the tower again. Like we know we know he has PTSD. We done no need to have PTSD.
SPEAKER_01It's fun to like have it flashback all the time where he's like he keeps thinking, like, man, do we suck?
SPEAKER_00But I mean, uh there's not a whole lot of bad, there's also not a whole lot of great in these episodes. So it's kind of the the signing moment of these episodes is Bora and Upa getting back together. And the drag the dragon appearance with the animation. Yeah, the animation dragon.
SPEAKER_02Like that's that's basically basically that like eight-minute long bit from where you know they put the dragon, like they're flying back into where like Goku starts to fly away. I think it's like eight somehow. Like that that that's the best part of these episodes, bar none.
SPEAKER_00There's nothing in there sucks. And there's nothing else in these episodes that really happens except for transitioning from the last bit to the next bit. Yeah. These are very much just like steps along the way to get us to the next little bit where it seems like we're gonna be getting some maybe one off, two off episodes together. Yeah. Just uh just to show Goku doing cool Goku stuff. Um, but yeah, I mean, I don't have much more to say. I mean, like I said, these episodes were fine, they do what they're supposed to do. They like they just get you from one point to the next.
SPEAKER_02Like, it feels bad giving a worse a worse part, because I'm like, even like kind of the pervy moment that happens where she's like, Well, I'll take you on because I gotta see Bulma all the time.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's like whatever. Like, Bulma kind of offers herself up in that spot. But that's not what that which is not good because she is still a minor.
SPEAKER_02Hey, she knows how to negotiate with old with old pervy men.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I'm not going to actually do that. Like her, her and um Yamcha are not together. Both like both like she at least still loves Yamcha enough to be like, I don't want her to miss out on this amazing opportunity. Yeah. So I'll do anything to get him into this training school.
SPEAKER_00And I'm obviously not worrying a bikini around Roshi. I don't trust him as far as I can put it in.
SPEAKER_02If I stuck a full bikini on, y'all want you to shoot me with a gun. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I'm I I'm not not long for this. Because Roshi has found a way to control my mind. Yeah. Roshi took on some mind control powers.
SPEAKER_02It is not me and my body. You just shoot me.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Um, but I mean, that's all we've got for these episodes. So uh sorry for it being kind of a shorter one, but there just wasn't, you know, like when you have these trans, there's gonna be episodes of the show where we're gonna have these transitional episodes that just line up like that, and we're just gonna have to like do it's gonna be kind of a shorter. Like it these were fun, but they weren't like must-watches. They were they were they did what they were supposed to do.
SPEAKER_02We we did exactly what the sh what the sh these two episodes of the show did. We stated our feelings, we got straight to the point, and we are transitioning into being ready to start talking about some real good stuff, hopefully. Yeah. In maybe you know, three or four podcast episodes once the tournament arc starts. I'm sure it's gonna be fun the next couple of episodes, just because I have no context to what might be happening.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, we don't know what terror and plague could mean. We don't know what the sky dragon is. It might be some good world building for the the this world.
SPEAKER_02Could be could just be some lore dumps while Goku's also getting stronger.
